Still Life Study with Conte Pencil, Sumi Brush and Apple
Includes Float Strip Frame
18x20, oil on board

I seem rarely to use flowers in my paintings. The ones in this still life came from my front yard. Flowers are very challenging for me to paint.

* Included in the sale price for this item is your choice of a one day private painting lesson for Southern California Collectors or a copy of a dvd still life painting lesson.

SOLD

Painting of Three Figures on the Shore
Includes Strip Frame
24x24, oil on board

I revisited this theme in my painting recently. Here is an example of that. When I paint I never envision a "look" or "style". I just observe and attempt to place colors down with fresh and honest eyes. Every painting I make outside of the subject is a spontaneous moment.

* Included in the sale price for this item is your choice of a one day private painting lesson for Southern California Collectors or a copy of a dvd still life painting lesson.

Still Life Demo with Clementines
24x24, oil on board

This was done as a demo during a workshop I was conducting. I truly love passing along my approach to painting. I am learning to develop the words to better convey that approach.

Study of a Figure at Taos, New Mexico
12x12, oil on board

Here is a simple figure study. This is about the color of the scarf against the sky, the color of the clothing and face against the trees and ground. I was interested in the color of the scene and how they created a sense of place and feeling that is different from the one in which I live.

Study for Figure at Piano
16x20, oil on linen laid on board

A quick and very economically painted study. The white passages at the lower area is merely the fine Belgian linen left unpainted. In the case of this study I believe that unpainted area does the trick.

$775

Red Flower
8x10, oil on gessoed rag board

A very quick color notation. This little study was recorded to video by my son Daniel. It was a collaboration of sorts.

Study # 1 for Sea Town Road
12x16, oil on velum mounted on board

This is a quick study for a large gallery bound piece I am currently working on. It is simply an example of the basic study I do before leaping into the more realized painting I have in my head. It is a study of the kind of light that I saw on the little sea town road and  buildings.

Study for Girl and Umbrella
12x16, oil on velum mounted on board

This study is an example of what I call a "Color Notation".  I consider these Color Notes as a way of warming up. Warming up my eyes. I see them as a way of describing in paint the most essential thing - "the coming together of simple shapes of color".

Still Life with Flowers
24x24, oil on board

Sometimes my work winds up earthy in coloration. Sometimes my work winds up pure in color. It is never a conscious decision rather an honest attempt at describing in paint what I genuinely see before me at any given moment.

I love painting from a still life set up. I find it is the fundamental subject which helps to remind me that all I paint is happening from the heart and eyes of a student.
